One day Technical Seminar takes place at Manipal campus Bangaluru
Department of Printing and Media Engineering, MIT, Manipal organized ‘Celebrating print’ – a one day technical seminar for Bengaluru printing fraternity at Manipal Academy of Banking campus, Hegde Nagar, Jakkur, Bengaluru on 21st March 2018, with the theme ‘New Horizons, New Hopes’.
During the inaugural session, Mr. B. E. Satish, President, Karnataka Offset Printers Association (KOPA), the chief guest highlighted about the current challenges faced by the printers of Karnataka and emphasized the need of unity of all the printers to confront challenges to be successful printers by achieving higher profitability.
Mr. O Venugopal, Vice president (South) AIFMP, the other chief guest was resourceful in sharing how the printing technology has evolved and highlighted the need of skill development of the print technicians.
Mr. Richard D’Sa, AVP, Marketing, Manipal Technologies who was the Guest of Honor explained the current trends of print business in comparison with the digital publishing trends emerging in the market. He ensured that the print industry is safe and will live long but needs to go through transformations in its strategies to satisfy customers and retain profits.
Mr. Murali K, Deputy Director, MGA of BFSI shared the details about the contribution of print industry in strengthening the Indian economy. He appreciated the department’s initiatives in bridging the gap between the industry and academia.
In the opening speech during the inaugural program HOD, Prof. Dr. Amruthraj H Krishnan, emphasized the need for constant Updation and Upgradation of knowledge, skills and technology to remain abreast in today’s highly competitive print market. and Mr. Devicharan, Convener of the event presented the Vote of thanks.
In his keynote address, Mr. V. Vaidyalingam, Director – Folding carton delivered talk titled “PEP Talk on the Time Bomb”. He highlighted that when looked through the prism of Pollution/Economy/employment – Pollution we get the answers for most of the serious issues that we as individuals, as business or as society face today. Using data and statistics on all the three elements, he showed how these factors affect business leading to cut-throat competition, uncertainty in business, reducing margins etc. The deep rooted systemic flaws were presented. Several alarming data was presented that set the audience thinking. The title was well addressed.
Mr. Amritpal Singh. Bawa, National Head – Business Development DIS of TechNova Imaging Systems spoke on “Driving Value through Innovative Embellishments”. He stressed upon going green and explained how Technova was taking green initiatives to safeguard the environment. He also gave a clear overview of all the products offered by Technova, specifically the newly introduced Digital Print Enhancement solutions machines which can touch the senses and add value to business with Innovative Digital UV and Foil. Mr. Madhukar Manoj, NSM, Bottcher presented “Bottcher – Creating Difference”. He shared his insights into the technicalities of rollers in terms of the surface characteristics, chemistry and the techniques to identify the quality of rollers. He explained how it makes a difference in cost, quality and durability on using Bottcher rollers. He highlighted the different options available in choosing the rollers for different applications mainly for UV inks and conventional inks and the combination of both. He also went through the different products offered by Bottcher India Limited and about the process of Rerubberising the rollers utilized on the printing machines.
Mr. Ganesh Kumar, Product Manager – Labels, from Heidelberg delivered an excellent presentation titled “TAG (Transform and Accelerate Growth) your Business” he conveyed details on present market scenario and scope of label industry. He also introduced the audience about the latest Gallus equipment offered by Heidelberg for label solutions. He explained how to achieve profitability in label business.
Mr. Samarth Chandrashekar, BDM – Software, ESKO, delivered his views on “Enhancing Productivity through Prepress Automation”. He explained with a case study on the application of automation using “Automation Engine” offered by ESKO in prepress industry. Live demonstration of this ESKO product made the audience understand how simple, effective and quick the pre-press process can be made to achieve faster productivity and higher profitability.
Mr. Gururaj Rotti, SAM – Converting and Graphic Arts, HB Fuller India Pvt. Ltd, presented on the topic “The best practices in adhesives”. He educated the audience on the adhesive chemistry, bond strength optimizing techniques, efficiency improvement and achieve the best in production process. Safety guidelines for adhesive handling and storage conditions, requirements to prolong the shelf life of the adhesives. He also shared his knowledge on different adhesive technologies and selection of right adhesive technology for the appropriate job.
Mr. Rajesh K. S, AGM, R&D and QC, Unit 2 from Tamilnadu Newsprint and Papers (TNPL) presented the topic “What a Printer Should Know about Paper and Board” in which he explained in detail about the various properties of paper and paperboard required for high quality printing. He briefed on the various ISO standards which needs to be considered and adopted to obtain best print quality on the press. He also explained about the extra measures taken by TNPL to reduce how to eliminate pollution caused to the environment. He also welcomed Bangalore printers to visit the factory to see and learn how paper and boards are made – the most important raw material of print industry!
Mr. Babu P, TSM (South), Redlands Machinery in his presentation “Converting Business – a Profit Center” revealed how huge the converting business is and the opportunities available in the area of converting especially in the area of envelope printing, confectionery product packages. He unveiled how Redlands machines are providing openings to start medium and large scale businesses. He statistically explained the profit margins attained by different envelope making techniques and choosing of correct machine in different envelope categories.

Gurudutt gave clear insights about the rapid transformations taking place in the field of digital printing and the challenges faced by the printers. He explained the current market trends in the short run on demand printing. He emphasized the need of automation and the interference of intelligent systems using advanced software’s provided by EFI to be a successful digital printer in today’s highly competitive market. He also explained the e commerce retail business and Work flow Systems.
Mr. VijethaShastry, Lead – Open Innovation, NASSCOM (National Association of Software & Service Companies), shared about the opportunities present in the field of innovations and incubation of new startups. He put light on the resources, ecosystem, current trends and the support provided by both the state and central government also the private organizations to enhance and motivate the research and development in India.
Mr. Tejas Alva, Associate of Global 3D Labs, in his presentation “3D Printing Technology and Market Trends“ he conveyed to the audience that 3D printing is the next big technology on earth which offers lot of advantages in manufacturing like geometrical freedom, cost effectiveness, less material wastage, high speed in prototyping. He clearly explained with video on the processes involved in 3D printing with the details of its applications and possible business opportunities for product mixing for the printers.
During the valedictory ceremony Chief Guest, Mr. Ravikumar KL, Principal, GIPT, Bengaluru addressed the need of right skill development of printing technologists to extract high quality and productivity. He also highlighted the need of mutual understanding and support of industry and academia to uplift the print community to the greater heights. He also sought the support of industry colleagues to help student community through internship, factory visit and projects.
Sagarika Shetty and Pranjali Kanchi, 3rd year students were Master of Ceremony during pre and post lunch sessions. Student volunteers of department coordinated and executed the event very smoothly and professionally.
