In India ABB has a sizeable presence, though not directly. “Since 2000 we have been supplying our equipments to leading press manufacturers like Manroland and KBA,” informs Damian Staedeli, Head of Printing, ABB Switzerland. “We are also an independent supplier of Press Management Systems and Press Control Systems and integration to mail rooms,” adds Damian.
“India is a growing market due to growth in literacy levels and their only immediate access to information is through newspapers. Our information is that this growth will reduce once more and more readers get access to internet and mobile applications. But the printed version of the newspaper will become a premium product in the future. Online editions will serve the mass market in the future. The present generation are headline readers and not interested in deep journalism and hence they get the news from Facebook, instagram, Google, television etc. The present culture is not to pay for these headline contents. Therefore the future is for local newspapers with local contents not covered by the online headline news snippets,” he continues, speaking about the Indian newspaper industry in general.
When asked about the GST, he says that earlier taxation was very high for imported equipments. “I understand that all these have been rationalized and thus it would be good for the industry,” he concludes as he was speaking to PRESSIdeas during the show.
