At the 7th Speciality Films & Flexible Packaging Global Summit, DuPont Advanced Printing highlights new technologies to help the Flexible Packaging market achieve their goals.
“This was an important event that was instrumental in helping shape the future of the flexible packaging industry, not only within India, but also set an example for other regions,” says Mr. Shyamal Desai, Marketing Manager – Americas, DuPont Advanced Printing.
Recognizing the key present day challenges before flexible packaging printers globally, he says that the challenge that the market faces across regions is the desire to get the branding and messaging consistent despite changes in either the thickness of the packaging or the materials used.
However, major technologies in recent times have helped change the course of flexible packaging printing globally and in India. DuPont has remained at the forefront in providing breakthrough technologies and help users answer these challenges.
Introducing Cyrel 2000TD FAST Processor – revamping the FAST platform
“One of the technologies that flexible packaging has adopted is the ability to down gauge while keeping the integrity of the packaging and still maintaining the functionality of the packaging. In addition, printers are looking to use more environmentally friendly substrates. With printing technologies such as gravure, printing on stretchable films is an issue – something that becomes a challenge as printers modify their substrates. This isn’t the case when you use flexographic printing. Therefore, we are seeing a stronger adoption of Flexo printing in this segment. Furthermore, DuPont Cyrel EASY helps printers maintain the same print quality and colour fidelity even as the thickness of the flexible packaging film is reduced, or the substrates are modified. In addition, to help the overall sustainability of the platemaking process, we have revamped our FAST platform by introducing the Cyrel 2000TD FAST Processor – further helping the printers achieve not only their quality goals, but also their productivity goals,” explains Shyamal.
Key DuPont technologies in flexible packaging printing and production leading printers globally
With Cyrel FAST, printers can meet their sustainability goals in the flexible packaging market. In conjunction, the EASY Platform including the Cyrel EASY BRITE screens allow the customers to achieve their print goals – getting vibrant colours with excellent highlights, while helping lay down a good white ink underlayer, allowing them to get ink-savings on their white inks. “The Cyrel EASY and Cyrel FAST technologies are available globally and throughout the world we have many delighted customers who can validate their performance,” says Shyamal.
Putting flexible packaging on par with rigid packaging, he says that the needs of packaging are best determined by the market. “We don’t believe one form is necessarily superior to another. Our objective is to be an integral partner to the value chain for this important segment in the industry,” he says.
Moreover, existing areas of printing and packaging can comfortably add flexible packaging printing to their portfolio. For example, food packaging, especially in single serving packages and stand-up pouches are some of the ideal candidates for flexible packaging.
Today, recyclability and biodegradability are key driving forces of new technologies and industry demands. In fact, recyclability and biodegradability are part of a larger sustainability initiative. DuPont Cyrel offers a solution to process plates that doesn’t require solvent – the Cyrel FAST system is another way for printers to meet their sustainability goals. In conjunction with the Cyrel EASY platform, the printers can not only meet their sustainability goals, but also their quality and productivity goals.
DuPont Cyrel – addressing rising costs and helping businesses grow
Of the key objectives of today’s printers, DuPont technology addresses the top with efficiency. One of the key objectives of printers is to address rising costs. The Cyrel EASY BRITE screens allow printers to get a better ink laydown through options of using lower volume aniloxes, thus consuming less ink. Similarly, the printers’ another key objective is – how to help grow their business. “Cyrel EASY plates have allowed customers to make the transition from Gravure to Flexo – making flexo more relevant in markets that were previously inaccessible,” emphasises Shyamal.
DuPont Advanced Printing allows printers to deliver high quality graphics regardless of the substrates used. The portfolio of Cyrel Plates is compatible with different ink types and works on a variety of substrates.
What are entry-level solutions for those adding new flexible packaging printing ventures? How can add value to the vast and diverse market and applications space in this field?
Apart from offering solutions to meet quality, productivity and sustainability goals of new entrants into the flexible packaging printing industry, DuPont has continuously contributed towards filling the gap between institute training and industry training. DuPont Advanced Printing has collaborated with the Avery Dennison Innovation and Knowledge Center in Pune which is an end-to-end training facility to help bridge the gap between industry training and institute training. “We conduct both theoretical and practical programs for skill development for converters and trade shops. We invite the industry to attend these training programs,” informs Shyamal.
“We aim to help printers progress from Gravure to Flexography and keep innovating to offer sustainable packaging solutions to the industry and develop solutions to retain the print quality regardless of the changes made to substrates. DuPont continues to invest in technology and innovation to help meet the goals of the industry,” he concludes.
