Puneet Datta, Director of Professional Printing Products (PPP) group, Canon India discusses with PRESSIdeas the trends and growth opportunities in the Wide-format business.
Wide-format Printing opportunity is growing worldwide. In a recent talk with PRESSIdeas, Puneet Datta, Canon presented an overview of growth areas and trends in this promising segment with respect to the Indian market. Canon caters to the Wide-format industry chiefly in two areas broadly classified into – Wide-format which is Toner- and LED-based and chiefly used in the AECM (Architects, Engineers, Consultants and Manufacturers) segment; and the Inkjet Aqueous-based Wide-format solutions. “In India Wide-format is growing but it’s not in line with the opportunities present here,” says Puneet.
One industry that is growing at a rapid pace in the country is infrastructure development. The industry opens new avenues for Wide-format Printing. It starts right from drawings for infrastructure projects. The Wide-format printing produces products like Drawing and Plans for use on drawing boards to onsite guide & reference to right up to finalization of the entire architecture.
Art-reproduction and Retail signage
Another popular use of Wide-format capabilities is the reproduction of art. Earlier artists didn’t have very viable solutions to answer the demand for reproduction of their creations. Likewise, even customers couldn’t afford to have art of their favorite artists in their drawing rooms. However, artists today are able to display their art at various exhibitions and galleries by digitally reproducing multiple copies of the same. With latest digital capabilities of Wide-format, the demand supply gap in this segment is being effectively filled today.
Retail is probably one of the fastest growing areas in India. Today, signage in organized retail is not about owning shelf-space; it is rather about catching eyes. “On my recent visit to Chandigarh, I saw a Harley Davidson showroom present in one key shopping mall there. I could understand it not only meant to have an efficient exposure but also to gain customers attention. And, the importance of signages in grabbing customers’ attention can’t be exaggerated,” says Puneet. The signage has changed its role from being a source of information to a means for grabbing attention. Consequently, both – quality and the message – have been made crucial parameters in today’s retail signages by this new role.
Creativity plays vital role in Wide-format Printing’s growth
Apart from the above changing trends in the field of Wide-format Printing, Puneet says, it is the individual creativity that is playing a vital role in the growth of this segment. “Use of various rigid substrates is one of the creative areas in Wide-format Printing. When we speak of creativity, I have seen people applying Wide-format technology on printing Venetian Blinds, plywood and many other materials,” says Puneet. “This type of printing not only brings possibilities of having personalized printed spaces for customers but also inventory optimization with On-demand Printing for businesses,” he adds. We have already seen the big boon brought in by Personalized Wallpapers and Tiles in recent times in the Indian market. Wide-format through latest Digital Printing capabilities is offering customers the right value proposition today. “I feel Wide-format is on the verge of growth explosion which we are going to experience in about next five years,” states Puneet.
Canon, according to Puneet, does not want to be someone waiting and watching this growth to happen. “We want to be very much part of this growth and enable this growth for our customers,” declares Puneet.
Canon’s market share in Wide-format Aqueous-based printing stood at 9 percent in the year 2013 as per the IDC report. Last year the company took a big leap to boost the share to 15 percent. “We expect to keep the growth figures intact this year as well,” affirms Puneet.
Despite the opportunities, Wide-format industry is dominated by a couple of thousand units and “That’s where Canon has to play a bigger role in the market,” feels Puneet. He wants to play the role of educating the market, service providers as well as the government on the opportunities Wide-format promises in various domains. “To say that India has just a market size of just over around four thousand printers on the Aqueous side and growth has been plus/minus 4-5 percent in the last 4-5 years, would be an understatement,” he says.
“Opportunities are everywhere,” points out Puneet. “If you see at any education institute, corporate office or general business places, you find posters with important information hanging by dozens around. If we happen to examine these posters, we see very crucial information displayed on them. I see a lot of opportunity in printing of these pieces of important and sensitive information by bringing Wide-format Printing ‘In-house’ for customers,” explains Puneet. “I see a lot of demand to arise from the corporate side as well in near future,” he says.
Canon has big plans for the Wide-format sector. The company will be making a few big announcements, including products and solutions and few more things very soon. Just keep reading these columns of PRESSIdeas.
