The latest Xerox Versant 80 duo at Speed Print is not only to boost sales figures by 25-30 % within a year, but the digital portfolio also fuels their target to be at the top by 2025.
Speed Print based out of Kolkata was established in 1978. Today, it is one of the leading providers of digital printing services in Eastern India. Since inception, it has been in the digital printing business and offers a vast range of services like designing and printing of corporate brochures, calendars, greeting cards, visiting cards, certificates, manuals etc. to a wide retail customer base exceeding 600+ customers. Besides, customers in the corporate sector include Spencers, CII, Hiland, ICICI Prudential and Indian Chamber of Commerce, to name a few.
Speed Print stepped on its growth path in 1983 with the introduction of the concept name ‘XEROX OFFSET’. This proved a launch pad for Speed Print, after which the company constantly kept upgrading itself into pre-press, press and post press every 2-3 years, keeping pace with the technological advancement in the printing industry.
The state-of-the-art infrastructure delivers complete turnkey solutions, right from concept development to finished products. Over the years, the company has built credibility, reputation and relationships. An approximately 6000sqft of area spread across 4 units include production, post-press & office administration. “In our facility, we house two Xerox 550 presses and one HP Latex 310 press in addition to the fabrication and binding presses,” says Vinod Dutia.
For fabrication, they we have a total of 15 machines. The company also owns an Epson Large Format printer and a Canon B&W Laser Printing press. They have also recently installed two Xerox Versant 80 Presses.
Vinod Dutia, Founder and Managing Partner, is responsible for overall Administration at Speed Print. Urvi Dutia, is responsible for their Business Development. There is a skilled workforce of 15 people constituting of technical consultant, machine operators, office staff and operational and sales teams.
“With the installation of the two Xerox Versant 80 presses, we expect a minimum of 25 – 30% growth on our sales within the first year,” asserts Vinod.
“All our employees receive software training by Xerox and other OEM engineers. Xerox takes special care to conduct these trainings during any upgrades too,” he adds.
In the near future, Speed Print plans to move up to add e-commerce portal by going online. “This (e-commerce), we think, is the future of retail printing. Our vision is to become the largest Digital print production company of the country by 2025,” envisions Vinod.
Strong association – shifting back to Xerox
Speaking about their recent Xerox Versant 80 installations, Vinod stresses their strong association with Xerox, “Since inception, we are in the digital printing business and our strong association with Xerox continued for over a decade till 2008. However, we had to shift to another brand because the product line at Xerox didn’t match our business requirement. During this time we invested heavily in other Digital presses but their downtime started increasing by the day and also there was little service support from them. As a result of which, we shifted back to Xerox.”
Versant 80 – the ability to print 350gsm regularly
While deciding on their latest Xerox, Speed Print’s primary focus was to increase their production capacity. While considering various brands, they found Xerox had an edge over their nearest competitors in terms of machine service support, reliability as well as pricing. Moreover, Vinod finds the sale and service support from Xerox before, during and post installation as excellent.
“We believe it was a good decision, as now with the Xerox Versant 80 press, we are able to print 350 gsm on regular basis. The machine, being a 2400 dpi virtual print production press, has a much better & wider colour gamut. It provides a combination of features and functionality which ensure high quality production – faster and better. It also allows printing on more media types and its powerful automation generates less waste,” shares Vinod. With the Xerox Versant, they are targeting the specialty media market along with customized/personalized printing options.
Speed Print has the advantage of putting both the presses at a single location which allows them to smoothly switch jobs. One machine is dedicated to print on 90gsm – 170gsm papers along with specialty paper and the other machine only prints on 250, 300 & 350gsm board. “With dedicated gsm range for each machine, we are able to manage print jobs much easier then we used to,” claims Vinod.
In the ever changing Digital Printing Industry, Speed Print is all prepared to take on tomorrow. It has a number of key focus areas and strategic steps for the future. One such area is to educate their clients on printing on special media and its benefits. “In order to make our vision of becoming the largest digital print production company of the country by 2025 come true, we plan to go online through an e-commerce portal. Additionally, we believe that personalization is the key to success and hence, we plan to develop a set of personalized products to meet the requirements of the market as well as our customers,” continues Vinod.
“There is a huge scope for printers who cater to organized sector & corporate companies. The option of Varibale Data Printing has not been explored too much as of now and needs to be marketed properly,” he perceives.
Now with Xerox Versant 80 presses up and running, Speed Print is specially equipped to tap this growth. The installed capacity now stands at more than 50,000 12×18 Prints which will allow them to target more market share by giving superior quality of prints to their customers. An enthusiastic Vinod expects his current investment of around 75 lacs to return in three years.
The customers are chiefly from Eastern region. Local delivers are done by dedicated staff and outstation deliveries are carried out through courier services.
Speed Print has Tally Integrated into their system to help them on various fronts from making estimates to Invoices. They don’t follow any manual process.
Vinod thinks that the Digital Printing Industry is currently suffering because of lack of set systems and parameters based on marketing, production and delivery. These are the major industry challenges, according to him. He, however, finds the answer to these challenges in economical CRM & ERP software which could cut down on the administration & production timelines and make operations much faster & reliable. “In future we would like the printing federation to roll out education institutions for the Printing Industry & have customized and certified courses on various aspects of the industry for students who want to pursue the subject and consequently, create more awareness and human resource for the industry. We will soon be launching our own marketing campaigns to educate customers industry wise,” concludes Vinod.
